Many of us have now been asked to work from home and if you’ve never done this before, it can be a challenge. Those of you new to remote working, here are some tips to make it more effective.

  • Routine.

Be ready to start your day at the same time as you would normally arrive in your office or workplace and make sure you get dressed. Finish your day at the same time.

Space allowing, set aside a specific, separate quiet area in your home where you can set yourself up.

  • Plan your day

Plan a task list the day before to make it feel more official and give you focus. By using online calendars and creating events and reminders, can also help to stay on schedule. However, its equally important to keep it fluid and let it change if it needs to.

  • Stay connected

To prevent the feeling of isolation, make time to pick up the phone or video call and have a real conversation, rather than relying on email and instant messaging. When checking in with co-workers, you can maintain conversations about work which will remind you and everyone else how your work is contributing to the big picture, but it’s also about not losing that social connection.

  • Fresh air

It’s important to take regular screen breaks and get up from your desk and move around just as you would in an office. Moving your body enables you to refresh and can increase your productivity when you return to your work.

If you don’t, it can mean your productivity levels drop, you become more tired and less motivated to complete what you’re working on. Go for a walk outside or spend time with others who might also be in the house.
